With pianist Leif Ove Andsnes’ ‘Beethoven Journey’ in motion, we look back at an interview we did with in which he talks about his playing and the moments of perfect freedom that it creates.

This fall sees celebrated pianist Leif Ove Andsnes embaring on his ‘Beethoven Journey’ - a multi-season project that will make the composer's music the centerpiece of the pianist’s life as a performer and recording artist for the next two seasons.

Starting in September, 2012, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes resumes “The Beethoven Journey,” his multi-season focus on Beethoven’s music. Anchoring his "Beethoven Journey" project will be Andsnes's performance and recording of all five of the master composer’s piano concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Following his NYC performances, Andsnes headed over to the UK for a stint with UK with the Philharmonia performing in Leicester and London.

With Andsnes’ ‘Beethoven Journey’ in full motion, we look back at an interview we did with in which he talks about his playing and the moments of perfect freedom that it creates. Said Andsnes back then: - When I play there is no thinking going on, says Leif Ove, because concrete thoughts are much too slow. However there is an acute consciousness of some other order; the mind is observing and enjoying rather than controlling. It is a moment of perfect freedom, a kind of freedom I experience in no other situations in life. I live for those moments, which are in a way beyond the music. But it is the music -in its physical essence- that takes me there.
