Nils Økland: Bris (cover) (150x150)Nils Økland: Bris

Publisert: 01/05/2006 av Tomas Lauvland Pettersen

MIC's Listen to Norway series continues with Nils Økland's 'Bris'.

On ’Bris’, Hardanger fiddle master Nils Økland opens up the traditional Norwegian instrument into territories other than folk. A classically trained violinist, Økland invites jazz and electronic improvisers on this album which both pays respect to the past and points to the future. The minimal accompaniment on harmonium, double bass, atmospheric percussion and subtle use of electronics creates open sonic spaces that allow the rich timbre of the Hardanger fiddle to resonate freely. On ‘Bris’, Økland and his co-musicians have clearly defined the roles of their respective instruments, playing sparsely to create space for the other players. The devastatingly beautiful compositions are devotional and spiritual in scope, while maintaining a dignified and understated earthiness, resulting in an album that is a real grower.
