On ’Perler på ei snor’ (”Pearls on a string”) vocalist Gunnlaug Lien Myhr documents the vibrant and rich folk song tradition of the Hallingdal area. Myhr has put in a considerable effort in the task of securing the musical heritage of her home region, spending countless hours in archives, listening to old tape recordings and consulting local performers. The end result is a vital double CD with a selection of songs that are highly alive despite having roots that go back centuries. In the liner notes, Myhr states that one of the intentions of this record is to make the material available to a larger audience, thus making the songs part of a living tradition. Given the high quality of her renditions and the vital presence throughout the recording, the future looks bright for the folk song traditions of Hallingdal.
