Barfly - The Great Escape is an international live music event; by day, a series of insightful interviews with leading figures from the worldwide music industry; by night, a festival of export-ready artists from across the globe performing at 10 walk-able venues, all under pinned by a comprehensive digital strategy and widespread coverage from media partners.

It will take place in the seaside city of Brighton, UK from 18th - 20th of May 2006, it will bring together all the key elements of the live and recorded music industries in a way that will entertain, educate and excite all comers - from experienced industry campaigners to those who just want to experience good music.

The Great Escape aims to help rising bands break into new markets - as well as give festival fans a taste of what's to come in the new bands tents over the summer. In its inaugural year, more than 100 gigs of all popular genres will take place in around ten venues throughout Brighton, where it's expected to become an annual event. The organisers hope to emulate the success of the American festival SXSW and The Netherlands' EuroSonic, which both act as live platforms for breaking artists as well as networking weekends for the music business.

The Great Escape will showcase a number of “Parkinson” style interviews with luminaries from the world of Music and Media. By using ‘real life’ examples to show the way in which success is achieved, the talks will give a unique insight into the realities of the music industry. Speakers include such heavyweights as President & CEO of EMI Music UK & Ireland Tony Wadsworth, Glastonbury’s Michael Eavis, The Smiths’ Andy Rourke as well as Primal Scream/The Stone Roses’ Mani.

Head of booking at The Great Escape, Martin Elbourne (also of the Glastonbury festival), visited Norwegian music industry event by:Larm in Tromsø to earlier this year in order to select acts for the Brighton festival. Elbourne’s by:Larm pick was hyped noise/shoegazer masters Serena Maneesh and Mogwaiesque droning outfit Low Frequency in Stereo. Says Elbourne: ‘It was an easy decision to make; both bands stood out from the crowd - both acts also perform as well on record as they do live.’

Elbourne singled out Serena Maneesh, which earlier this year signed to the Beggars Group subsidiary PlayLouderecordings, as an act with great potential for the UK market: ‘ Currently, there are no British bands that do what Serena Maneesh are doing. After a few gigs in London there’s already a strong buzz for the band.’

Gig schedule for the Norwegian acts at The Great Escape:

18th of May
Low Frequency In Stereo – Freebutt 9:00PM – Audio.

SuperJupiter – Ocean Rooms 8:00PM - Audio.

20th of May
