Sámi performers to open Glastonbury

Sámi outfit Adjagas are set to kick off this year’s Glastonbury.

Adjagas 2005

The traditional Sámi chanting tradition – joik – is at the centre of vibrant duo Adjagas’ form of expression. The duo is now set to bring out Sámi traditions to a wider audience with their opening slot at this year’s massive Glastonbury festival in the UK

Adjagas were formed last year and consists of the two young and vital joikers Sara Marielle Gaup (21) and Lawra Somby (24). Both received family training in the art of joiking and have performed at a number of events including slots with Anneli Drecker (famed a-ha and Röyksopp collaborator) and festival gigs.

Adjagas Glasto opening slot came about after a very spectacular gig at this year’s by:Larm music industry convention/showcase festival in Stavanger. Adjagas kicked off a lofty concert at the top of the Prekestolen mountain plateau some 600 meters above the Lyse fjord and in front of a crowd of top-shelf international music industry reps. Among the spectators was Glastonbury’s head of booking, Martin Elbourne who was blown away by the intense performance of Adjagas. Elbourne was so impressed that he promptly invited the duo to open Glastonbury (which is now sold out and is expected to draw a crowd in excess of 130 000).

Adjagas are scheduled to open Glastonbury at the Pyramid Stage on June 24th alongside such heavyweights as the White Stripes, Elvis Costello, The Killers and Doves.

Adjagas are also set to play the 46664 Arctic benefit concert in Tromsř.

Adjagas debut album is scheduled for a release during the winter 2005/06.
The outfit’s name is a Sámi word describing the mental state experienced during transition from sleep to awake.

Other Norwegian acts to play Glastonbury includes Röyksopp who are set to play alongside such acts as Razorlight, Kasabian, Bloc Party, Interpol and Hot Hot Heat at Glasto’s Other Stage
