Leif Ove Andsnes: Franz Schubert - Piano Sonata D850, 9 Lieder

MIC's Listen to Norway series continues with Leif Ove Andsnes: Franz Schubert - Piano Sonata D850, 9 Lieder

Leif Ove Andsnes 2002

Describing the keyboard music of Austrian composer Franz Schubert as his “great love”, celebrated Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes has begun a multi-disc recording project, surveying the composer’s greatest compositions. This record features a striking new aspect; the sonata is not paired with another solo piano work but rather with three songs performed by acclaimed British tenor Ian Bostridge. Says the pianist on his fascination for Schubert: “This repertoire speaks to me in such a profound way. It has incredible beauty, which strikes a chord in me in a way that no other music does.” And beautiful it is indeed: Andsnes’ playing is both eloquent and authoritative, conjuring up that special ingredient that engages the listener from start to finish. The selection of nine Schubert lieder covers a wide range of emotional states from playfulness to pathos, from dramatic scene to religious ecstasy, from passion to tragedy – all of it tied together by superbly performed interpretations.
