Stable first quarter album sales

Mixed trends on the Norwegian market: total phonogram sales are down while album sales remain stable, singles decline and DVD music continues its growth in the first quarter. Domestic repertoire maintains a strong position on the home market.

The first quarter sales on the Norwegian phonogram market are characterised by mixed trends. The total accumulated phonogram sales are down, but still positive trends can be found as album sales remain stable and domestic repertoire plus DVD music shows strong growth.

Total album sales in 2004’s first quarter amounted to 3 million units, a stable figure compared to last year’s statistics. Singles are down 27% whiled DVD music maintains its healthy growth with a 22% increase.

Domestic repertoire sees a formidable growth in the first quarter. Compared to 2003, Norwegian albums accounted for 46% in volume and 54% in value of the total sales. 21% of the albums sold in the first quarter were domestic releases compared to 14% in 2003.

Total phonogram sales in 2004 are down 3% in volume and 5% in value compared to 2003. 3 million albums, 167 000 singles and 76 000 music DVDs were shifted on the Norwegian market in 2004’s first quarter.

Sales figures in January were up 4% in volume and 1% in value while the February figures were less positive; down 9% in volume and 8% in value compared to 2003. In January, CD albums were up 4% in volume, singles were down 14% in volume and 12% in value while DVD music was up a whopping 54% in volume and 31% in value. February saw CD album sales down 8% in volume and 9% in value, single sales down 30% in volume and 29% in value and DVD music continuing its solid growth with and increase of 40% in volume and 20% in value.

Total accumulated sales in March amounted to NOK 75,6 million(€ 9,1m / USD10,9m), the 2003 figures were 81,7m(€ 9,8m/USD 11,8m).
