Frode Haltli: Looking on Darkness

Listen to Norway continues with Frode Haltli: Looking on Darkness

Frode Haltli: (cover) Looking on Darkness

Still in his twenties, the young Norwegian accordionist Frode Haltli is clearly a performer of comparable gifts and imagination, whose virtuosity has inspired many Scandinavian composers. The stimulating ECM debut showcases his skills in a cross-section of works written especially for him by Bent Sørensen, Per Magnus Lindborg, Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje, Magnus Lindberg, and Asbjørn Schaatun. The new works explore the furthest sonic regions of the accordion, ranging from Ratkje’s Japanese-inspired gagaku variations performed with the Vertavo String Quartet to Danish Bent Sørensen’s beautiful and melancholic title-work Looking on Darkness. The CD is masterly produced by ECM’s Manfred Eicher and received the Norwegian Grammy "Spellemannprisen" for best contemporary music album in 2002.
