Håvard Gimse, Gunilla Süssmann, Royal Scottish National Orchestra: Geirr Tveitt, Piano Concerto No. 4

MICs Listen to Norway series continues with Håvard Gimse, Gunilla Süssmann, Royal Scottish National Orchestra: Geirr Tveitt, Piano Concerto No. 4

Conducted by Bjarte Engeset, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra provides a solid musical framework for pianists Håvard Gimse and Gunilla Süssmann’s interpretations of Geirr Tveitt’s Variations on a Folksong from Hardanger for two pianos and orchestra and Piano Concerto No. 4 Aurora Borealis. The inspiration for Tveitt’s Piano Concerto is inextricably linked to his close relationship with nature. Aurora Borealis – the Northern Lights – with its pulsating bright white, greenish, yellow and red colours can be static, dramatic, shooting as well as even a bit terrifying. So too is Tveitt’s glittering music, piercing pyrotechnics kindled by piano and orchestra in partnership drawing a vivid portrait of his night-sky masterpiece. To sum up the recording: luminous instrumental textures, gorgeously evocative keyboard writing (and playing) as well as close integration of soloists within the larger ensemble.
