Northern Europe Jazz Quartet
MIC’s Listen to Norway profile series continues with Northern Europe Jazz Quartet.
On this self-titled debut album, Norwegian string quartet NEJQ displays a unique take on the string swing tradition. With an emphasis on cool jazz from the sixties, the quartet takes a step away from the repertoire usually associated with the genre. NEJQ leans towards the American jazz tradition, and interprets tunes from a wide variety of composers. Songs such as Ornette Coleman’s “Ramblin” and Eric Dolphy’s “Booker’s Waltz” are contrasted by standards as “I fall in love too easily” and tunes composed by the quartet’s own members. All in all a young and refreshing album that breathes new life into the traditional string-swing scene.
