About MIC
Music Information Centre Norway – MIC – was established under the name of Norwegian Music Information Centre in 1979. The founding was initiated by the Norwegian Society of Composers and the Norwegian Cultural Council.
MIC is the Norwegian section of the International Association of Music Information Centres - IAMIC, which organises 39 similar centres in 37 countries.
MIC receives funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Church and Cultural Affairs. The 2009 audited accounts show that MIC’s total budget amounted to NOK 11,1m, out of which NOK 8,85m was support from the Ministry of Culture.
MIC staff counts 13 persons.
Statement of intentions
- MIC’s goal is to work for increased use of Norwegian music domestically and internationally.
- MIC seeks to inform and profile on the qualities of the professional Norwegian music life (composers, performers and other participants), regardless of genres and artistic style.
- MIC aims at being a central collaborator for the participants on the Norwegian music scene and Norwegian public life.
- MIC is to develop good services for music publishing and information about the Norwegian music scene, which again shall result in increased income to strengthen the further development of the centre.
Tasks
- The responsibility of manuscript archives of more than 8000 Norwegian manuscript works.
- Production of scores and parts for Norwegian music, in addition to distribution of and information on these materials to performing bodies throughout the world.
- International and domestic information on and profiling about Norwegian composers, musicians and music business.
- Publisher of mic.no and Norway’s largest online magazine Ballade.no.
- Publisher of www.listento.no, which serves as an important portal to the Norwegian music scene with news, information on composers, musicians and institutions, catalogues, calendars a.o.
- Co-ordination of Norwegian participation at important international music fairs.
- Consulting for decision-makers, media a.o. domestically and abroad.
- International distribution and profiling of Norwegian recordings.
- Facilitation of Norway’s most extensive music industry directory
- Administration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ tour support programme in support of Norwegian artists and bands international touring activities.
