MIC’s Listen to Norway profile series continues with Øyonn Groven Myhren and Odd Nordstoga’s Nivelkinn.
This live-recording of the premiere of Øyonn Groven Myhren and Odd Nordstoga’s commission Nivelkinn captures the unique epic lyricism inherent in Telemark writer Aslaug Vaa’s (1889-1965) Nivelkinn-cycle. The duo of Myhren/Nordstoga manage to create a rich and varied foundation for Vaa’s epic-lyrical poem cycle. The instrumentation is sparse – voice, guitar, accordion, lyre and wash-board – yet Myhren and Nordstoga embellish Vaa’s words with tasteful arrangements that are topped off by beautiful vocal lines. Nivelkinn was Vaa’s only work of epic nature, and it dwells on man’s untamed emotions and a close bond to the nature – a bond that borders on a natural-mystic character.
