Maria Kannegaard: Quiet Joy

MIC's Listen to Norway series continues with Maria Kannegaard's 'Quiet Joy'

Maria Kannegaard trio: Quiet joy (cover)

‘Quiet Joy’ is pianist Maria Kannegaard’s second album, and as the title suggests, it reveals two seemingly disparate elements. Two seemingly opposite states of emotions combined to create something new, a combustive effect of creating an effusive, personalized style within instrumental jazz. Backed by bassist Ole Moren Vågan and drummer Thomas Strønen, Kannegaard presents twelve beautiful original compositions as well as one surprising cover tune; Outkast’s Hey Ya. Kannegaard’s presence is powerful and confident throughout this recording – she hits the keys with determination and a well developed sense of aesthetics. The thick, woody double bass notes and tasteful drumming create a perfect framework for the strong melodic themes and innovative improvisation displayed on ‘Quiet Joy’.
