Darkthrone and Satyricon

October is not the cruellest month, as we all know it is April, but it sure carries a darkening feeling. The time is right either for cuddling up by the fireplace with Nick Drake, or to indulge in some of the dark musical matter issued from Norway as a seasonal greeting.

Enslaved just released their already hailed album Vertebrae, and soon names like Satyricon and Darkthrone will follow suit.
The latter is one of the absolutely most uncompromising and revered black metal outfits around renowned for rejecting any hints of commercial machinations or artistic compromise. Since the inception twenty years ago Darkthrone has been among the most important bands in developing the genre and the sound of Black Metal. But at the same time Darkthrone, now a duo made up of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto, has consistently challenged all paradigmatic truths about genre, also those truths they themselves have so often defined. Even if the albums they produced in the early nineties are viewed as constitutional to Black Metal, they actually don’t fit squarely into this genre at all. They have always also been dissimilar, and retained punk roots and other influences that don’t fit with the now mainstream Black Metal concept.

Darkthrones and Black Flags is their 14th album: “A perfect fusion of backend rock, metal and punk, their website reads, and a continuation of the celebrated F.O.A.D from 2007.”

Satyricon is the vehicle of Sigur Wongraven, arguably the most able and straight-thinking musician in the realm of Norwegian sooty rock. The band, currently a duo, is nothing less than a flagship of extreme music. Satyricon was among the first acts to transcend the established fan base of dark metal. Simply due to the music’s overwhelming magnitude and quality they have reached out to wider musical audiences and become a zeitgeisty and defining name.

Satyricon will release the upcoming album Age of Nero on November 3rd. Produced by the band and noted producer Joe Barresi, the album features a number of diverse contributors ranging from classical choir Grex Vocalis to The Norwegian Radio Orchestra.
