Zanussi Five: Zanussi Five

MIC's Listen to Norway series continues with Zanussi Five's self-titled first album

Zanussi Five - Zanussi Five

With a powerful horn section with no less than three saxes, this quintet fronted by bass player par extraordinaire Per Zanussi represents an uniqueness and integrity that lacks an equal on the current Norwegian jazz scene. Zanussi Five present a set of extrovert and slightly surrealist tunes full of swinging grooves, energetic free jazz and stunningly beautiful melodies. Throughout their debut album the quintet display a tremendous joy of playing, a seemingly limitless supply of energy and tons of integrity. Zanussi Five recalls John Zorn at his best, Ornette Coleman at his most intense or Atomic at its wildest. Outstanding.
