Nude on Sand at Café Oto

Free-form folk duo Nude on Sand to play Café Oto/Ny Musikk’s London concert series next week.

London’s Café Oto venue and Norway’s Ny Musikk organization have teamed up to produce a string concerts featuring top tier, genre-bending Norwegian performers.

Following a July performance by Minibus Pimps (feat. John Paul Jones and Supersilent’s Ståle Storløkken), duo Nude on Sand is the concert series’ second event with their Oct 1st concert which also features appearances by Angharad Davies and Stephanie Hladowski.

Nude on Sand is the duo of uncompromising singer/songwriter/artist Jenny Hval and improvising guitarist Håvard Volden. Together they rip apart the idea of how a guitar/voice duo should sound, shifting with a SNAP from naive blues, spoken word and fragmented pop songs. The lyrics follow these abrupt shifts with endearing absurdity, from diaristic monologues to more abstract poetry.

Jenny Hval

Jenny Hval (b. 1980) has in recent years made a name for herself as a writer, journalist, recording artist and sound artist both in Norway and abroad. When her third record Viscera was released in 2011, Italian Vogue described her as: “an artist of significant competence, both musically and intellectually.” Multidisciplinary and transgressive are words often employed to describe her art, but Jenny Hval’s polyphonic artistry is in fact seamlessly interwoven between musical, literary, visual and performative modes of expression. Despite her young age, she has already infused, carved and modulated an artistic voice that is altogether present, accessible and obscurely complex at the same time.

"a fearless performer and artist, who knows no boundaries and is incapable of compromising." The Milkfactory

Håvard Volden

Håvard Volden is a young improvising guitarist from Norway - extending the tradition of tabletop players such as Keith Rowe, Jim O'Rourke or Kevin Drumm he plays mostly without electronics and has leant his sensuous playing to Jenny Hval's group as well as improvised encounters with Toshimaru Nakamura, Lasse Marhaug and fellow guitarist Daniel Grønvold.

July saw the launch of a new series of events at London’s Cafe OTO co-curated by Norway's Ny Musikk organisation and OTO projects with an inaugural gig featuring Minibus Pimps.

Supported by MIC, future events in the series include appearances from improvising guitarist Stian Westerhus, noise icons Jazkamer collaborating with UK film maker Greg Pope as well as next week’s Nude on Sand performance with more to be confirmed
