Frode Gjerstad trio: St. Louis (cover)

Frode Gjerstad is one of the Norway’s pioneers of free, improvised music.

His career spanning more than twenty years, he has spent most of his time abroad working with American and British musicians. The main reason for this is that he has been ahead of his time on the domestic scene.

The Frode Gjerstad Trio is in fact the first constellation of his career comprised of only Norwegians. Although Øyvind Storesund on bass and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums belong to a different generation, this trio has come to work astonishingly well together in record time, something evident in the warm reception with which it has been greeted.

“St. Louis” is a live recording from that American city in 2002. The music is improvised with Gjerstad leading the way in subtle interplay that emphasises the “dialogue” with Nilssen-Love. Storesund’s bass is the undulating ground that sustains this dialogue and also the link between the subtle percussion and the solo flights of Gjerstad.

The trio’s work on this record has been described as “treading the finest of lines, the trio reining-in their inherent powers to produce a spine-tingling finale.
